History

The Leilani Estate subdivision was formed in 1964.  The name "Leilani" in Hawaiian means "royal child" or "heavenly lei".  The Hawaiian name for the Leilani Estate subdivision area is Keahialaka.  A very old chant in Hawaiian references the name Keahialaka and is available here.

Geography

Leilani Estates is located at 19°28′25″N, 154°55′13″W (19.473546, -154.920268).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 10.8 km˛ (4.2 mi˛), all land.

A U.S.G.S. topographic map of the Leilani Estates subdivision can be found here.  An aerial photo of the subdivision can be found at maps.google.com.  Here on the website, you can also find a subdivision map showing the lots and a complete street map.

Leilani Estates is located in an area of the Big Island that has a high risk for lava flow.  A lava hazard map of the Kilauea area can be found at the U.S. Geological Society.  Note, the Leilani Estates subdivision appears on the map to the right of Pahoa where you can read the word "zone" in East Rift Zone.  The purple area is zone 1.  Zone 1 is the most hazardous; it consists of the summit area and rift zones because Kilauea's frequent eruptions originate in these areas.
